Atmospheric-Turbulence Compensation Experiments Using Cooperative Beacons

چکیده
III Lincoln Laboratory recently completed the three-year Short-Wavelength Adaptive Techniques (SWAT) field program, designed to investigate the performance of adaptive optics in a variety of scenarios. This article describes the operation of the SWAT adaptive optics system working with cooperative beacons. Examples are presented of system operation in compensating star images and in propagating a compensated laser beam to a satellite.

Atmospheric-Turbulence Compensation Experiments Using Synthetic Beacons
• Atmospheric turbulence limits the ability of ground-based telescopes to form images of astronomical or orbiting objects. Turbulence effects also decrease the on-axis intensity otlaser beams propagated from ground to space. Conventional adaptive optics systems typically compensate for the deleterious effects of the atmosphere by sensing the wavefront of light originating at or near the object ...
متن کاملAnisoplanatism in Adaptive Optics Compensation of a Focused Beam Using Distributed Beacons
In systems that achieve laser beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence by phase compensation with adaptive optics, the performance depends on the beacon’s spatial distribution. A formulation is obtained to calculate the anisoplanatic Strehl ratio of a phase compensated, focused beam for any beacon distribution and turbulence profile. Analytic results are obtained for several beacon geome...
متن کاملCharacterization of atmospheric turbulence effects over 149 km propagation path using multi-wavelength laser beacons
We describe preliminary results of a set of laser beam propagation experiments performed over a long (149 km) near-horizontal propagation path between Mauna Loa (Hawaii Island) and Haleakala (Island of Maui) mountains in February 2010. The distinctive feature of the experimental campaign referred to here as the Coherent Multi-Beam Atmospheric Transceiver (COMBAT) experiments is that the measure...
متن کاملBootstrap beacon creation for overcoming the effects of beacon anisoplanatism in a laser beam projection system.
We address the problem of using adaptive optics to deliver power from an airborne laser platform to a ground target through atmospheric turbulence under conditions of strong scintillation and anisoplanatism. We explore three options for creating a beacon for use in adaptive optics beam control: scattering laser energy from the target, using a single uncompensated Rayleigh beacon, and using a se...
متن کاملPerformance of Coherent Lidar Receivers Using Atmospheric Compensation Techniques
We present recent studies on the impact of phase and amplitude fluctuations on Doppler lidars using coherent detection. As there is an emphasis on elucidating those implications of the atmospheric propagation problem that bear on the design and reliability of optical coherent lidar systems, we consider in a unified framework the effects of atmospheric turbulence and diffuse target speckle on th...
